About Me

Drawing on my background in computing, my teaching and research involves building systems and technologies to ask questions about emerging media and what it means for human experience. In this work, I value human-centered, arts-integrative and multidisciplinary ways of working and work closely with closely with architects, designers and artists. This work focuses on topics including data and human experience, the maker movement, and the internet of things. I also build capacities through innovative pedagogies and platforms that build communities of practices and to enable others work in these ways.

My current NSF-funded research focuses on leveraging the internet of things to support documentation in maker-based learning contexts (#1736189, $464,678.00) and the recently launched Ground Works initiative: a partnership between CMU and the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) to extend this project and deliver a new online platform for arts-integrative scholarship. Previous work has included the MakeSchools Alliance, an effort to catalog Making in higher education, and the NSF-funded XSEAD project, a community platform for arts-integrative practice.

I defended my Ph.D. at Dublin City University in August 2011, holds a M.Res. degree in Design and Evaluation of Advanced Interactive Systems from Lancaster University and a B.Sc. in Computer Applications from DCU. I was previously an Assistant Research Professor at Arizona State University’s School of Arts, Media and Engineering between 2011-2013 before moving to Carnegie Mellon University.
